The suspension insulators used on 500-kV transmission lines in the East China Power Grid come in two types: porcelain and glass. The porcelain suspension insulators include standard type (X--4.5, XP series), double-shed type (XWP2 series), deep-rib type (XP5 series), and bell-type insulators (such as NGK’s CA--735EZ). A newly introduced three-shed type is also available (Tangshan NGK’s CA--872EZ). Glass insulators come in standard and bell-type designs (LXP series and FC series). According to field measurements, the ratio of natural contamination accumulation among standard, double-shed, and bell-type insulators is approximately 1:(0.3–0.5):(1.0–1.4).
